Giving a client a phone number is not the same as connecting them to a resource.
A resource only matters if the client understands it and can use it.
Strong Linkage Means the Client Understands
- What the resource is.
- Why it matters.
- How to access it.
- What to say.
- What information may be needed.
- What barrier could come up.
- What the follow up plan is.
A weak script is:
“Here is a number you can call.”
A stronger script is:
“This resource may help with the housing barrier you mentioned. Let us write down the number, the hours, what you need to ask, and what information they may request. Would you like to call now or schedule a time to call?”
Ask
- What would make it hard to use this resource?
- Do you feel comfortable calling them?
- Would it help to write down what to say?
- What time today or tomorrow could you make the call?
- What support do you need to follow through?
The Goal
The goal is not to do everything for the client. The goal is to reduce confusion and support the client in taking action.
